Cons

  • Relatively meager improvements to a 20 year old game

One of the most famous real time strategy games of all time gets a new lease on life with this definitive edition. As a celebration of the series' 20th anniversary, the graphics have seen a serious upgrade to the once modern but now fading graphics. It even comes with the Rise of the Rome DLC released after the original. More than that, the graphics have been upgraded to support a full 4K resolution.

But if you're an old pro at Age of Empires, you'll find the core gameplay is what you've always known. You'll be able to choose from 16 civilizations and lead yourself through their development in a format that blends together traditional real time strategy standards with some of the deeper layers of strategy found in the Civilivzation series.

That's not to say that everything is the same. Some of the now rough sensibilities have been smoothed out to provide the quality of life experience that modern gamers come to expect. The core experience here may be the same as it always was, but it's been tailored to meet the higher demands of gamers who were too young to play Age of Empires the first time around.
